our little savage river glacier

after we hiked up a huge scree field to get up the mountain, the boys decided to explore the glacier. it was beautiful and cold. it always amazes me how blue the very interior of glaciers can be. We hiked around, exploring all of her cracks and crevasses, finding little waterfalls, and then huge ones. The more interesting part was getting out again, back to the other side which involved a very nasty fight between me and an alder bush, very messy business. Once we got out and back down to the river, we couldn't get across again. So, Ben and Brian forged the rushing ice cold river and Lisa and i, thinking it would be easier, started back up the glacier to climb back up the way we came down. funny.
Somewhere in the middle there was a large hill of ice, and being we had neither ice axe nor crampons, after much struggling i ran as fast as i could up the face and made it about half way. jimmy rigging my way up, i finally made it to the ledge and helped lisa up on the rock stairs she had carved. then we continued up the rock face and over the ledge, to go back down the scree field and back to the bridge. Do it herself!
As if we weren't tired enough, we were concerned about getting back to Anchorage in time to get Ty and Amber to their plane, so we ran the mile out on the trail as fast as we could. Good day, super fun.
